Who We Are

The YWCA of South Hampton Roads' Emergency Shelter program provides a safe place for victims of domestic violence and crisis intervention.  Food, clothing, and transportation, intensive case management, and support services are provided to women, children, and families. The emergency shelter case management team provides advocacy for each shelter resident, connecting their needs with a broad range of comprehensive services and community resources.  The Y's “Housing First” approach allows individuals and families to become more stable while seeking the services they need by moving them quickly through the shelter and into permanent housing. This approach has been known to reduce homelessness recidivism.

The YWCA Rapid Re-Housing Program provides services to survivors of domestic violence and single homeless women through advocacy, intervention, and support. The program works to move individual families from the emergency shelter to safe, stable, permanent housing within an average of 30 days or less. Services include rent and utility assistance; childcare assistance, land lord advocacy life skills, financial literacy, job readiness and placement services.

Committed to ensuring that no individual facing imminent danger will be turned away regardless of capacity, the YWCA purchased a larger shelter in July 2019. The new facility has enabled us to expand from 9 to 22 rooms, increased our shelter footprint from 3,000 to 9,500 square feet and more than doubled the capacity of clients that we are able to serve under one roof.   YWCA Emergency Shelter is for those who will fight the pervasive influence of homelessness, poverty, and abuse and are willing to make an empowered decision to rise and become a productive community member who understands that the decision to create a better life rests entirely on them.
